Top measuring and sensor technology in Shanghai

20.05.2008

Some 300 measurement and sensor specialists present their products at IAC/TME/SENSOR China in the Shanghai Everbright Convention Center from 4-6 June 2008. Almost a dozen specialists from Germany show their products for the fourth time, with 10 of these companies located in the centre organized by the AMA Fachverband für Sensorik, Mess- und Prüftechnik (AMA Association for Sensor Technology). Experts offer extra information on technologies and applications each day in the integrated forum area.

Heraeus Sensor Technology has been the world’s recognized technology and market leader in platinum resistance thermometers since the very beginning of the platinum era around 160 years ago. The company as a specialist in complex thin-film process control supplies millions of platinum sensors a year and has just expanded its capacity again. The applications range from difficult measuring points in the car to ovens or cooker hobs produced under great cost pressure. Sensors are supplied all over the world for applications in heating, air conditioning and ventilation, plus medical engineering and process technology. Sensors are available in many different designs for temperatures from -196 °C to over 1,000 °C.

Two of the German sensor exhibitors specialize in measuring gas concentrations. J. Dittrich Elektronic GmbH focuses on two segments: first on oxygen measurement for controlling incineration and composting plants and second on the universal and meanwhile prize-winning carbon dioxide sensors with twin-beam infrared measuring systems (NDIR), e.g. for controlling air conditioning plants. The digital measurement signals (Ethernet or Modbus protocol) are used to control air conditioning in automated buildings. Carbon dioxide is used in indoor areas, for example, as a marker for air quality (IAQ, Indoor Air Quality). The range is rounded off by sensors for toxic and explosive gases.

UST Umweltsensortechnik GmbH supplies a wide range of platinum resistance temperature sensors in thin-film technology, plus fully assembled resistance thermometers with a variety of connections for temperatures from -100 °C to over +1,000 °C.

The UST gas sensors function with semiconductor oxides on a ceramic carrier material with regulated platinum heaters and utilize the change in conductivity of the sensitive film with changing gas concentration. These sensors and sensor arrays are used in applications for air quality, detection of smouldering fires, leakage detection, explosion protection, quality control and process measuring technology.

Sensor-Technik Wiedemann is one of the leading manufacturers of thin-film pressure sensors in Germany. The properties of these sensors – with diameters of only approx. 3 mm – are initially calculated very exactly. Their performance in terms of stability, accuracy and overload capability is also optimized for use in extremely critical applications. Combined with suitable electronic circuitry, they can be used for tasks such as transmitters for monitoring safety parameters in cranes.

Gantner Instruments Test & Measurement GmbH specializes in recording, processing and transmission of measurement signals. The company is known as a specialist for recording electrical, thermal and mechanical parameters. One example is the e.series distributed data acquisition system, which is used, for example, for measurements in wind power stations. The modules for processing measurement data are extremely flexible and can also process a wide range of measurement signal formats in time-synchronous mode. Optical fibres are used between measurement modules and the controller to protect against lightning strikes.

Caesar Datensysteme GmbH has made a name for itself as competent system supplier and service provider for the industry’s test and research departments in the fields of measuring technology and telemetry. One example is an innovative digital telemetry system of fully digital and highly miniaturized design that also allows the measuring unit to be mounted on small rotating components. The receive unit processes signals from up to 4 measuring units simultaneously and synchronized operation is possible. The power for the moving modules is supplied inductively for long-term measurements, otherwise it is obtained from a battery.

ZMD AG is a leading manufacturer of analogue and mixed-signal ICs for applications in automotive engineering, medical engineering and industry. The company specializes in the development and sale of ASICs for high temperatures (up to +165 °C), high voltages (up to 40 V) and with extremely low power consumption. One special product line comprises highly accurate and low-noise ICs for sensor signal processing.

The organizer of the AMA Centre at IAC/TME/Sensor has almost 500 members and is Europe’s largest association for manufacturers and research institutions involved with sensors, measuring and testing technology. The daily forum reports on topics such as the current sensor trends in Europe. IAC/TME/Sensor in Shanghai is organized by Nürnberg Global Fairs, a 100 % subsidiary of NürnbergMesse GmbH.
